Every recipe of the game is one of three kinds. The recipe list shows them all, each drawn the way this guide does.
The workbench grid
A
Workbench holds a three by three grid. Open it with the interact key and fill
its nine slots from the inventory as you would a chest’s. Shaped recipes match their pattern
anywhere on the grid (some also match it mirrored left to right); shapeless ones only ask for their
ingredients, one cell each, in any place. A cell may ask for more than one of its item: the number
in its corner. Whatever the grid makes shows on the right, with two buttons: Make (once) and
Make All (as many times as the grid holds). The result goes into your inventory, and what does
not fit falls at your feet.
Some recipes use a tool as an ingredient (a saw, an axe, a chisel): the tool stays in its cell and only loses some durability each time, breaking once worn out.
By hand
A few shapeless recipes known by everyone, of at most four ingredients, are made without a bench. The inventory screen lists, under By Hand, every one of them you carry the ingredients for (from the hotbar and the bags); a click on Make makes it. Twine, the hafted flint tools, the first stations and the workbench itself are made this way.
Any planks will do for the workbench: the recipe asks for the planks tag.
Shaping by the voxel
Some materials are worked one voxel at a time on a work surface. The interact key lays the piece’s material on the empty surface; you then choose what to make among the recipes it can aim at, and every click on a voxel is one gesture:
- Flint is knapped on a
Knapping Stone, a flint or a pebble in hand: the
left button knocks a voxel off, and it never comes back. - Clay is worked with bare hands on a
Clay Forming Board: the left button
takes a voxel off, the right button adds one, layer upon layer. - Metal is worked hot on an anvil (
Stone Anvil or
Bronze Anvil): with a hammer in hand the left button hits and the right
button upsets, with a chisel the left button splits. The piece cools on the anvil, and must be
reheated in a forge once it falls under the recipe’s working temperature.
The target shows as ghost voxels over the piece. The gesture that completes the pattern gives the
result and empties the surface; one that leaves the pattern out of reach ruins the piece (a ruined
flint gives back a
Flint Shard).
Flint
Flint Axe HeadFlint is knapped on a single layer of ten by ten voxels; clay and metal on sixteen by sixteen, over several layers.
Stations over time
Stations transform what they hold over time: a
Campfire cooks, a
Drying Rack dries, a
Pit Kiln fires clay, a
Quern grinds while someone turns it. Their slots come in three groups: inputs,
fuel and outputs. Each recipe asks for its inputs, a duration in game seconds and a minimum
temperature. A station with a fire burns the fuel of its fuel slots one at a time and heats up
while it burns, cooling down without it.
A run goes on while the contents make the recipe, the station is hot enough and the outputs have room. Changing the contents to another recipe loses the progress; a fire gone out or full outputs only pause it.

Learned recipes
Most recipes are known by everyone. A few are learned from a book: hold it in hand with the right
mouse button pressed for its reading time, or lay it on a
Lectern and read it
there. The book is kept, and your character knows its recipes for good.
