Almost every building block is a workbench recipe, often with a tool left in the grid that loses some durability each time. A few come from a kiln or a forge. None of them has a separate slab or stair block: you get those shapes by chiselling (see below).
Stone
Each rock of the world (granite, andesite, basalt, limestone, sandstone, slate) gives the same family of blocks. They break like the rock they come from: granite and basalt need at least a copper pickaxe to drop anything (see Tools and mining).
| Block | Recipe (workbench) |
|---|---|
| Ashlar | 1 rock + a chisel (2 durability), shapeless |
| Cobbles | 1 rock + a hammer (1 durability), shapeless |
| Rubble | 4 pebbles of that rock in a 2 x 2 square |
| Cracked ashlar | 1 ashlar + a hammer (1 durability) |
| Mossy ashlar | 1 ashlar + 1 |
Pebbles come from the loose stones lying on the ground, which are of the local rock. Slate has no
pebbles: two
Slate stacked in a column give 2
Slate Rubble,
and two side by side give 4
Slate Roof. Any chisel works (flint, copper or
bronze), and any hammer.
Limestone ashlar is learned: you cannot make
Limestone Ashlar until you have
read
The Art of the Cliff. Limestone cobbles, rubble and the cracked and mossy
variants are known by everyone.
Lime, mortar and plaster
- Burn
Limestone in a pit kiln to get lime. - Mix it at the workbench:
Lime Mortar (lime, sand, gravel, gives 2) or
Lime Plaster (lime and sand, gives 2), the white render of walls.

Wood
Every tree species gives planks and a beam:
- Planks: 1 log + an axe (1 durability) gives 2 planks. It is a hand recipe, no bench needed.
- Beam: 1 log + a saw (2 durability) gives 1 squared beam, at the workbench.
Shingles: 2 planks of any species + an axe give 4 shingles, a roof block.
Wooden Palisade: 2 logs in a column give 2 palisade posts, which join each other.
Wattle: 9 sticks filling the grid give 2 wattle.
Earth, clay and roofs
Daub: 2 clay balls + 1 plant fibre, or 1 dirt + 1 plant fibre, both give 2. By hand.
Mud Bricks: by hand, 1 dirt + 1 clay ball + 1 plant fibre give 2
Raw Mud Brick, then each dries for 900 seconds on a drying rack.
Bricks: shape a
Raw Brick on the clay forming board from 2 clay
balls (an 8 by 4 block, 3 layers high), then fire 2 raw bricks in the pit kiln for 1 brick.
Roof Tiles: shape a
Raw Roof Tile from 1 clay ball, then fire
2 of them in the pit kiln for 1 block of tiles.
Thatch: 4
Reeds in a 2 x 2 square give 1 thatch.
Sod Roof: by hand, 1 peat + 1 dirt give 2.

The shaping patterns are on the raw brick and roof tile recipe pages; see Knapping, clay and smithing for how shaping works and Fire stations for the kiln.
Glass
Glass is melted in a bronze forge: 4 sand and 1
lime give 2 glass. Six glass blocks (two rows of three) give 16
Glass Pane, thin
panes that join each other, iron bars and solid blocks. Glass and panes let light through
untouched, and break into nothing: you do not get them back.

The three styles taught by books
Three building styles are learned recipes: reading the book teaches them to your character for good.
| Book | Teaches |
|---|---|
| the three timber frame blocks | |
| limestone ashlar | |
| the four stained glass colours |
Timber frames
Panels of daub between dark timbers. Any species of beam works.
Stained glass
Shapeless: 4 glass, 1
Lead Ingot and a colouring give 4 stained glass blocks.
- Blue:
Woad Blue or a
Cornflower - Red:
Madder Red or a
Poppy - Yellow:
Weld Yellow or
Litharge - Green: a
Copper Nugget
Lead comes from galena, see Metalworking.
Doors, ladders and openings
Aim at a door, gate, trapdoor or pair of shutters and press the right mouse button to open or close it, whatever you hold. A door is two blocks tall and faces the way you looked when you placed it; breaking either half breaks both.
Spruce Door: the same pattern with spruce planks.
Studded Oak Door: 1 oak door + 4 studs (copper or bronze), shapeless.
Oak Trapdoor: 6 planks in two rows of three give 2.
Oak Shutters: 4 planks in two columns with a gap (P.Ptwice) give 2.
Oak Fence: PSPoverPSP(planks and sticks) gives 3;
Oak Fence Gate: SPSoverSPSgives 1. Fences cannot be stepped over.
A ladder is fixed flat against the face you place it on. In its cell, jump or forward climbs at 2.4 m/s, crouch holds still, and with nothing held you slide down at 2 m/s at most; landing from a ladder costs no health.
The
Iron Grille Door,
Iron Bars and
Chain
blocks exist but have no recipe in the current game.
Chiselling
A chisellable block is 16 x 16 x 16 micro voxels you can carve and fill. This is how you make slabs, stairs, roof slopes and fine detail. Chisellable: the rocks and all their ashlar, cobbles and rubble, the ores, soils, sand, gravel and clay, planks and beams, daub, wattle, bricks, mud and fire bricks, mortar and plaster, timber frames, and the roofs (tiles, shingles, slate, thatch, sod). Not chisellable: glass and stained glass, doors, trapdoors, shutters, ladders, fences, palisades, furniture, stations, plants and bedrock.
- Press C to switch from building to chiselling (press it again to go back).
- Left button: removes the brush box of micro voxels at the one you aim at.
- Right button: fills the brush box in front of the aimed face with the block in hand.
- Shift + mouse wheel, or the
[and]keys, changes the brush: a cube of 1, 2, 4 or 8 micro voxels on a side.
Rules the server checks:
- A plain block becomes chiselled on the first stroke that removes from it; you can only remove from a block that can be broken. Adding needs every micro voxel of the box to be empty.
- One block may mix up to 16 materials, and every material in it must be chisellable.
- A chiselled block breaks whole when you break it in building mode.
- Strokes are rate limited: a flood of them is refused.
No chisel item is needed for this mode; the chisel tools are used in recipes (ashlar) and in smithing.
